The listening sub-test has 2 parts and has 20 to 28 items.
The topics are of general healthcare interest and is available to the
candidates in all the professions. Every part has 15 minutes of recorded speech
and has pauses to enable you time to write your answers.
You can hear the recording once and write your answers while
listening.
Listening sub-test structure
Part A consultation is for 20 to 25 minutes
Part A evaluates your ability to adhere to the facts in a
consultation. You have to listen to a recorded health professional and patient
consultation and finish a note taking task which is guided by relevant
headings.
Part B is a presentation for 20 to 25 minutes. It evaluates
your ability to comprehend a short conversation on a health related topics that
takes place in the workplace. You need to listen to a recorded conversation or
lecture by a healthcare experts and complete a wide range of open ended choice
tasks.
How is the ability to listen evaluated in OET?
Many of the task types are there so that a nice sample of
every candidate's listening ability is tested. This has tasks evaluating
comprehension like multiple choice questions and short answer response
questions. There are tasks which evaluate your ability to listen for particular
information like completion of tables or lecture notes and sentence completion.
The responses of the candidates are evaluated
against a marking guide. Candidates with scores can have their papers double
marked to make sure there is fairness.
