Occupational English Test for Nursing professionals.

The listening sub test has two parts with 20 to 28 question items. The topics are of generic healthcare interest and are available to the candidates in all the professions.

Every part has about 15 minutes of recorded speech and consist of pauses to enable you time to write your answers. You will hear every recording one and are expected to write your answers while listening.

Part A has consultation between 20 to 25 minutes. Part A evaluates your ability to follow facts in a consultation. You will listen to a recorded health professional patient consultation and complete a note taking task which is guided by relevant headings.

Part B has presentation between 20 to 25 minutes. Part B evaluates your ability to comprehend a short talk on a health related topic that takes place in the workplace. You have to listen to a recorded talk or a lecture by a healthcare expert and complete a range of open ended and fixed choice tasks.

Speaking is for 20 minutes. The speaking sub-test take at least 20 minutes. You have to take this part of OET by making use of materials for your profession. In every role play, you have to take your professional role and the interlocutor plays a patient or a client or the relative of a patient or the carer.

Writing is for 45 minutes. The writing sub test takes about 45 minutes and it is profession specific. There is one task set for every profession based on a typical workplace situation and the demands of the profession. A nurse does the task for nursing and a dentist does the task for dentistry.

The task is to write a letter which is a referral letter. A varied type of letter is needed for example a letter of transfer or discharge or a letter to inform a patient, carer or a group.

Reading is for 60 minutes. The reading sub test consists of two parts and takes about 60 minutes to complete. The topics are of generic healthcare interest and are available to the candidates across all the professions.

Part A evaluates your ability to source information from many texts to synthesize information in a meaningful manner and to skim and scan material to get information fast. You will need to read 3 or 4 short texts which is related to a single topic and complete a summary paragraph by filling the missing words.

Cambridge University launches OET | OET Exam | OET Classes

Cambridge Assessment English (part of the University of Cambridge) and Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment, Australia, are jointly offering Occupational English Test (OET) for nursing professionals planning to take up practice in United Kingdom and Ireland.

OET is a standardised English test which has been developed for this industry exclusively. The recognition and acceptance of the test in the UK and Ireland opens up a world of opportunities for the nurses seeking to work in these countries”, Cambridge Assessment English’ Regional Director for South-Asia T K Arunachalam said.

 

The healthcare professionals who want to practice and register overseas can use OET as a tool to assess their language proficiency. Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment Trust owns the Occupational English Test which is a venture between Cambridge English and Box Hill Institute, Australia.

Nursing and Midwifery Council, United Kingdom and Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland has accepted the OET as proof of English proficiency for trained nurses.

Presently, OET centres are located in 11 cities of UK and the test can also be taken up in over 40 countries.

UK Recognises OET for Nurses and Midwives | Seabird International

Nurses and midwives looking to register in the UK will be able to take a new occupational language test designed specifically for healthcare professionals from next month.Under the changes that come into force on November 1, the Nursing and Midwifery Council will formally recognise the OET test for overseas-trained nurses and midwives who need to prove they have a proficient level of English for registration in the UK.

Those whose first language is not English will now be able to take one of two recognised language tests to prove their competence, instead of the current single IELTS option.

OET CEO, Sujata Stead explained: “What sets OET apart from other tests is that it is designed for healthcare. We use real communication scenarios, similar to the ones healthcare professionals encounter every day.“For example, a nurse’s speaking skills will be assessed via a face-to-face role play using a typical nursing scenario, with a trained interlocutor who plays the part of a patient or carer.”

In addition, nurses who have qualified outside the EU/EEA are also able to demonstrate their English language capability in two other ways:

Either by providing evidence that they have undertaken a pre-registration nursing or midwifery qualification taught and examined in English, or by having registered and practised as a nurse in another country where English is the first and native language, and a successful pass in an English language test was required for registration.

NMC chief executive and registrar, Jackie Smith said: “Nurses and midwives trained outside the UK make up around 15% of our register. They are vital to the delivery of health and care services across the UK.

“By accepting alternative forms of evidence we are increasing the options available for nurses and midwives to demonstrate they have the necessary command of English to practise safely and effectively, without compromising patient safety.”

OET is already accepted by healthcare regulators in the Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Dubai for registration purposes, as well as both Australian and New Zealand immigration for all visa categories where proof of English language skills is required.

Tests are currently available monthly at 84 test centres in 37 countries.

Overseas-trained nurses and midwives who are required to take an English language test to gain registration with the NMC need to achieve Grade B in all four OET subtests: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

“In addition, the speaking and writing, tests are different for each of the 12 healthcare professions we test so the scenarios for nurses and midwives will be different to the scenarios for physiotherapists,” said Stead.

“Regulators and employers can feel confident that healthcare professionals who have achieved the required level in OET for their profession can communicate effectively in the healthcare workplace.”
