The listening sub test has two parts with 20 to 28 question
items. The topics are of generic healthcare interest and are available to the
candidates in all the professions.
Every part has about 15 minutes of recorded speech and
consist of pauses to enable you time to write your answers. You will hear every
recording one and are expected to write your answers while listening.
Part A has consultation between 20 to 25 minutes. Part A
evaluates your ability to follow facts in a consultation. You will listen to a
recorded health professional patient consultation and complete a note taking
task which is guided by relevant headings.
Part B has presentation between 20 to 25 minutes. Part B
evaluates your ability to comprehend a short talk on a health related topic
that takes place in the workplace. You have to listen to a recorded talk or a
lecture by a healthcare expert and complete a range of open ended and fixed
choice tasks.
Speaking is for 20 minutes. The speaking sub-test take at
least 20 minutes. You have to take this part of OET by making use of materials
for your profession. In every role play, you have to take your professional
role and the interlocutor plays a patient or a client or the relative of a
patient or the carer.
Writing is for 45 minutes. The writing sub test takes about
45 minutes and it is profession specific. There is one task set for every
profession based on a typical workplace situation and the demands of the
profession. A nurse does the task for nursing and a dentist does the task for
dentistry.
The task is to write a letter which is a referral letter. A
varied type of letter is needed for example a letter of transfer or discharge
or a letter to inform a patient, carer or a group.

documentation which includes information to utilize in your response.
Reading is for 60 minutes. The reading sub test consists of
two parts and takes about 60 minutes to complete. The topics are of generic
healthcare interest and are available to the candidates across all the
professions.
Part A evaluates your ability to source information from
many texts to synthesize information in a meaningful manner and to skim and
scan material to get information fast. You will need to read 3 or 4 short texts
which is related to a single topic and complete a summary paragraph by filling
the missing words.
