OET Listening Strategies | Seabird International

Pass OET and be a nurse in the UK | OET Exam

The nursing professionals keen to practice in the United Kingdom and Ireland can do it by clearing the Occupational English Test (OET) offered by an Indian arm of the University of Cambridge.
Offered by Cambridge Assessment English (part of the University of Cambridge) and Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment, Australia, the OET has a significant role in assessing the language proficiency of the nursing or healthcare professionals who wish to register for overseas practice. Overseas-trained nurses and midwives who are required to take an English language test to sign up with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) must get Grade B in all four OET subtests—reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The test score is valid for three years.

Aakansha, one of the language trainers at a Mohali-based preparation provider for OET training, the only certified institute for it in Asia, says: "We have witnessed 30-to-40% increase in the number of OET-training enquiries in three months. The centre's online master class and free preparation resources shared on Facebook page are likely to motivate more health professionals for taking the OET."

World of opportunities

The language trainer says: "Most of the nursing students want to go to Australia. The kind of exposure and work experience they get is really good." TK Arunachalam, South-Asia regional director of Cambridge Assessment English, said: "English is a major language of workplaces around the world and it is extremely important for the healthcare-sector professionals to learn it. OET is a standardised English test developed for the healthcare industry exclusively. The recognition and acceptance of the test in the UK and Ireland opens up a world of opportunities to the nurses who aspire to work in these countries."

Gurleen Khaira, OET course leader at the Mohali-based insitute, told TOI: "The OET has been designed for health professionals specifically and is the most suitable test for them. It is designed to test relevant language skills needed for everyday situations in healthcare organisations. It helps the candidates with not only registration but the development of soft skills for a competitive edge professionally."

Entry requirements

To ensure that the candidates have a realistic chance of passing the OET with grades A or B on completing the preparation course, the coaching centre has specific entry requirements for the programme. In case the aspirants fail to qualify for direct entry, they can join for a medicine preparatory course at the centre to develop the foundation. "This helps the training centres ensure quality control," Gurleen said.

Anita, who holds a bachelor of nursing degree from Maharishi Markandeshwar University, Mullana, and wants to be a nurse in Australia, says: "My family suggested me an OET course after I graduated in 2015. Clearing this test will help me do post-graduation in Australia and find a job over there. I have heard good things the quality of exposure you get there and how the Australian health sector is growing. I have not decided yet when to sit for the OET. I'll prepare until I am confident."

Boost your score in Reading | Online OET

It’s really important in Reading Part B that you read the questions carefully. There are a number of different types of question you may come across in the test paper. Understanding the question correctly is the most important strategy you have for selecting the correct answer.

Here are a few of the different types of questions and some suggestions about answering them:

  • Sentence completion. Some questions will give you the start of a statement and 4 different ways of completing it. When choosing your answer, it is essential that you read the start and end of the sentence together. Sometimes, one of the answer options may be in the text but not related to the start of the statement used in the question.
  • True or false. Some questions will ask you to pick out which of the statements is true or false. This means that the other statements will be the opposite i.e. if the question asks you which statement is true, the other 3 statements must be false. Read the question carefully. Some students miss the word ‘true’ or ‘false’ in the question which leads them to choose the wrong answer.
  • Vocabulary definition. Some questions will ask you to choose the best match for a word or phrase within the text. The key word or phrase will be underlined in the text so it is important to read it within the context of the sentence and the neighbouring sentences. This will help you to understand the meaning. It’s good to think about whether the sentence is positive or negative as this can help you to choose which of the answer options are correct using your knowledge of the positivity or negativity of each option.

The answers can be found in the texts

For all the different question types, you should be able to justify your chosen answer using information you find in the text. It’s a good habit to get into, while you are preparing for the test, to be able to explain to yourself why an answer is right or wrong. When marking your answers using the key, don’t just accept the answer the key says is correct. Look at the other options and find information in the text to prove it was incorrect.

Occupational English Test In India

The nursing professionals who are planning to take up practice in the United Kingdom and Ireland can do Occupational English Test, which is offered by an arm of the University of Cambridge, in India.
The Occupational English Test (OET) is offered by Cambridge Assessment English (part of the University of Cambridge) and Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment, Australia, a press release said.
The OET has a very significant role as it assesses the language proficiency of nursing or healthcare professionals who wish to register and practice in overseas.

The Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment Trust owns up this OET as a venture between Cambridge English and Box Hill Institute, Australia.
The OET has been accepted by Nursing and Midwifery Council, United Kingdom and Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland as proof of English proficiency for trained nurses.
Cambridge Assessment English, South-Asia, Regional Director, T K Arunachalam said that "OET is a standardized English test which has been developed for this industry exclusively. The recognition and acceptance of the test in the UK and Ireland open up a world of opportunities for the nurses seeking to work in these countries.”
As of now, the Occupational learning test has around 11 centers across the country, while the test can also be taken up in over 40 countries, the release added.

OET accepted by NZ Immigration | Online OET | OET Coaching

International healthcare professionals can now take OET to fulfil the English language requirements for both visa purposes and registration with healthcare boards and councils in New Zealand. In addition, OET can be used as proof of proficiency for admission to healthcare courses.

OET has been providing healthcare-specific English testing for the past 30 years, and the test is already accepted by major healthcare regulators and educators in New Zealand, including the Medical and Nursing Councils and University of Otago.
The New Zealand Immigration website states that hospitals and practices across New Zealand are looking for doctors, midwives, surgeons and 36 other healthcare occupations. It’s estimated that New Zealand will need 380 extra specialists every year to meet the OECD average by 2021, and up to 25,000 more nurses by 2030.
OET helps to fill these gaps by providing proof of English language proficiency, and the opportunity for healthcare professionals to become more competent in English related to their workplace, leading to safer and higher quality care. Unlike many English tests, OET’s writing, reading, listening and speaking tasks use real healthcare scenarios, such as calming a distressed patient or writing a referral letter.
OET CEO, Sujata Stead, says: “Safety and quality of care for patients lies at the heart of OET. By testing English through real healthcare scenarios, regulators and employers can feel confident that professionals who’ve passed OET can communicate effectively in their healthcare workplace.”
“We applaud Immigration New Zealand for giving OET candidates the chance to use their test results for their visa application. We share the common vision of supporting healthcare professionals to successfully contribute within the New Zealand healthcare system,” she concludes.
